Every June, we proudly recognize National Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) Week (June 12-18)—a time to celebrate the compassionate, skilled professionals who serve as the backbone of long-term care. CNAs are often the first to greet our residents in the morning and the last to say goodnight. Our CNAs do not see our CARES values as letters on a wall; they see them as a high standard of quality care for their residents. They provide hands-on support, emotional comfort, and critical insight that ensures quality care and a high quality of life.
At Mission Health Communities, CNAs are not just caregivers—they’re champions of dignity, trust, and connection. At Mission Health, we take pride in investing a great amount of time and money in our staff to encourage career growth. We understand the struggle of having a full-time job and going to school, along with the burden of money, so we created a program that allows our staff to continue working their regular hours and get paid to attend courses and receive their certification without spending a dime.
The Mission Health Education program launched in 2021, and we have seen great success! Since the launch, we have over 1,500 employees across Mission Health Communities who have graduated from the CNA course and received their certification. Led by Glenda Crellin, her incredible staff includes Cassandra (Cassie) Stephens, Princess Carr, Jessica Tinsley, Ambuer Hill, and Heidi Ranz.
To celebrate CNA Week and shed light on the impact of this role, I sat down with Cassie and Jessica to hear their perspectives as instructors, mentors, and advocates for aspiring CNAs.
What are some key skills and values that someone gains through the Mission Health CNA training and certification course?
Cassie:
At Mission Health, our CNA training emphasizes both clinical competence and compassionate care. Students gain essential hands-on skills, but equally important, they develop core values like Character, Attitude, Respect, Excellence, and Service.”
Jessica:
In addition to clinical skills like assisting with personal care and vital signs, students learn critical thinking and values such as patience, teamwork, and deep respect for resident dignity.
How do CNAs make a difference in the lives of residents at Mission Health?
Cassie:
CNAs are often the heart of resident care. By assisting with daily activities and offering emotional support, they help residents feel seen, heard, and cared for. Their presence brings comfort and stability—many residents see their CNA as family.
Jessica:
Their impact is immeasurable. CNAs support everything from personal hygiene to mobility, ensuring residents’ comfort and well-being. They become trusted companions and bring a vital human touch to every aspect of care.
How do CNAs contribute to the overall mission of quality care at Mission Health?
Cassie:
CNAs are vital to our mission of delivering high-quality, person-centered care. They’re on the front lines, noticing subtle health or behavioral changes that can trigger timely interventions. Their teamwork and dedication directly shape resident outcomes.
Jessica:
They are our eyes and ears. Their close observation and timely communication are crucial for resident safety and early detection of issues. Simply put, our quality care mission depends on their vigilance and compassion.
How can the community show more support for CNAs year-round, not just during CNA Week?
Cassie:
Support goes beyond one week a year. Small gestures—thank-you notes, staff spotlights, community shout-outs—can make a big impact. Supporting career advancement through programs like our Make a Friend Mentor Program or CMA certification also shows investment in their growth.
Jessica:
Recognition matters. Issue awards like ‘Best Team Player’ or acknowledge those who go above and beyond. Include CNAs in care planning and hiring interviews. And always, always encourage their professional development.
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a CNA?
Cassie:
Being a CNA is more than a job—it’s a calling. It’s demanding but deeply rewarding. You’ll make a real difference in people’s lives, often when they need it most. Stay compassionate, never stop learning, and know we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Jessica:
Be ready for a rewarding challenge. Prioritize empathy, learning, and self-care. Whether you stay in the CNA role or use it as a stepping stone in healthcare, you’ll carry the experience of truly making lives better, every single day.
A Lasting Impact
As Cassie and Jessica so clearly shared, CNAs are much more than support staff—they are life-changers. Their hard work, heart, and human connection define the Mission Experience. Our CNAs do not see our CARES values as letters on a wall; they see them as a high standard of quality care for their residents. This CNA Week, we say thank you—but our gratitude doesn’t stop here. Every day, we’re proud to support, grow, and walk alongside the CNAs who care with purpose.
