CARES Hearts Across Mission: Spreading Joy, One Card at a Time

CARES Valentines greeting

This Valentine’s season, Mission Health Communities launched its first CARES Hearts Across Mission—a simple, heartfelt initiative created to bring residents and team members together in a shared expression of kindness across our organization.

Inspired by similar programs in skilled nursing and assisted living communities nationwide, Amy Meinecke, Executive Administrator, and Cindy Heigel, Life Enrichment Director at The Residence at North Ridge (Independent and Assisted Living), saw an opportunity to connect Mission communities in a meaningful new way. What began as a casual conversation quickly turned into something that brought people together across states and settings.

Sometimes the best ideas begin in the most ordinary moments. During a one-to-one meeting, Amy and Cindy were brainstorming creative ways to engage residents and staff when Amy mentioned a Valentine’s card trend she had seen on social media. That spark of inspiration led to a simple question:

What if we shared the CARES love across Mission?

From that idea, CARES Hearts Across Mission took shape.

More than just a seasonal activity, it became an opportunity for residents and team members to reach beyond their own community walls and connect with others who are part of the broader Mission Health family. It was a reminder that while we serve in different locations, we are united by shared purpose and values.

“At The Residence at North Ridge, we cherish moments that bring people together and spark joy,” Amy shared. “Valentine’s season felt like the perfect time to celebrate kindness, connection, and CARES.”

Residents and team members hand-crafted Valentine’s cards filled with thoughtful messages. Each card carried not only creativity, but a personal touch—turning a simple gesture into something meaningful.

Communities across Mission participated by creating and mailing handmade Valentine’s cards to sister communities, including the home office. With a goal of sending 31 cards—one to each community—this effort helped ensure every location both gave and received a reminder that they are valued and connected.

Living the CARES Values

CARES Hearts Across Mission reflected our values in action:

  • Character in taking time to think of others
  • Attitude in choosing joy
  • Respect in acknowledging fellow communities
  • Excellence in creating meaningful engagement
  • Service in lifting one another up through small acts of kindness

Most importantly, the initiative highlighted something simple but powerful: Mission is more than the buildings we work in—it’s the people who live, serve, and care within them.

There is excitement about continuing this tradition throughout the year, creating opportunities around other holidays to stay connected and celebrate together.

The Residence at North Ridge also finds creative ways to foster connection and joy beyond Valentine’s Day—engaging residents and team members in fun, lighthearted TikTok videos that bring smiles to many.

Thank you to Amy and Cindy for helping spark an idea that reminded us all how far a small act of kindness can travel.
