Yates Center, KS – Mission Health Communities confirms that all residents, patients, and staff of Yates Center Health & Rehabilitation were safely evacuated on Friday, March 14, following a rapidly spreading prairie fire in the area. Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of our staff and local emergency personnel, there were no injuries, and all individuals were relocated to safe accommodations.
“We are incredibly grateful for the quick action of our team at Yates Center Health & Rehabilitation, who prioritized the safety of our residents and executed our emergency protocols flawlessly,” said Stuart Lindeman, President & CEO of Mission Health Communities. “Additionally, we extend our sincere appreciation to local fire departments and emergency personnel for their heroic efforts in containing the fire and assisting with the evacuation. The well-being of our residents remains our top priority, and we are working diligently to ensure they continue receiving the care and support they need.”
The fire, driven by dry conditions and high winds, accelerated quickly, prompting an immediate emergency response. Following notification from the Woodson County Fire Department that the fire could pose a potential threat, Yates Center Health & Rehabilitation activated its Emergency Evacuation Plan. All 37 residents and patients were initially transported to temporary quarters at Yates Center High School. As conditions evolved, the town made the decision to shut off power, requiring an additional relocation of residents to other Mission Health sister communities in the area.
The extent of the damage to the Yates Center Health & Rehabilitation facility is being assessed. Early reports indicate significant impact from fire, sprinkler activation, and smoke exposure. Mission Health is working closely with authorities and restoration specialists to determine the next steps.
“All families of our residents have been notified and will continue to receive updates,” said Nikki Jacobs, Regional Vice President of Mission Health Communities. “We are committed to ensuring our residents are comfortable and well cared for as we navigate this situation. Our team is focused on supporting our residents, families, and staff throughout this transition.”
Mission Health Communities expresses deep gratitude to the firefighters, emergency responders, staff, and community volunteers who played a vital role in keeping residents safe. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
